Killeany Lodge Pilgrim Hostel, in Killeany, Inis Mór

European Voluntary Service (EVS)

European Voluntary Service is an EU funded volunteer programme to encourage social cohesion between EU member states. It is open to anybody between the ages of 18 and 26 from an EU member state or an applicant member state. It is also possible to qualify for EVS if you are from a non-EU East European country, a non-EU country bordering on the Mediterranean, or a country in South America. An applicant must apply through a 'Sending Organisation' in his/her own country. These organisations are registered with a State agency in that country and may be a youth or other type of organisation. For countries outside of the EU, where state agencies have yet to be established, application is made through an appointed coordinator. Further information about this can be had by e-mailing us.Voluntary service is normally for 6 months to 1 year. Travel and training expenses are paid for by the EU and a pocket money allowance is given. Full board and lodging is provided by the 'host organisation', Aisling Árann in this case, which also provides on-site training and mentoring.EVS Volunteering at An Charraig:At An Charraig, on the island of Inis Mór, Aran Islands, there are four volunteer positions available through EVS. Each position is described below:

Outside you will have responsibilities in the kitchen garden, the herb garden, in the plastic tunnel (greenhouse) and with the chickens, ducks and geese. For this work you need to be friendly, welcoming and a good practical organiser.

2. Self-Sufficiency (Organic Gardening):

Willing Workers On Organic Farms (Wwoofers)

An Charraig coordinates an organic vegetable growing and marketing project on behalf of the island's community development co-operative Comharchumann Forbartha Árann. Our wwoof volunteers will gain valuable experience in every area of this project.Wwoof volunteers:

  • we like volunteers to stay at least one month
  • it is possible for a volunteer to stay a whole year
We will need to know:
  • why you want to come to us particularly
  • what your experience and skills are
  • how long you want to stay
  • when you want to come
What we offer you in return:
  • a comfortable bed
  • good food
  • the company of an international household of mainly young people
  • training and skills practice in organic growing
  • training and skills practice in marketing of organic produce
We regret that we are not in a position at the moment to offer pocket money, however we will help you find a part-time job if you need some money.Full-time paid work:For a person, or perhaps two people, with proven ability and interest, full-time work is available growing and selling vegetables and fruit on the island of Inis Mór. Income will relate to the value and quantity of produce grown and sold. This job is preferably year round, or at least nine months February to October. This person(s) will have a contract with Comharchumann Forbartha Árann to manage and coordinate the organic growing project on Inis Mór. This growing project involves seven part-time growers on the island and may involve more in the future. Land, tunnels, a rotovator and other facilities will be provided by the comharchumann on a rental basis to this person who will grow himself/herself and coordinate others. The contract will require that the restaurants on the island be supplied throughout the summer and that a weekly market stall and a box system be available to local people. This person will also coordinate ongoing training for those involved, through training programmes organised and funded through the comharchumann.

Other Volunteer OpportunitiesChild Minding combined with Organic Gardening: We have a position available at An Charraig for a volunteer who would be happy to mind children and work with them on their projects in the mornings and work on the organic gardens in the afternoon. We have four children, three girls and one boy, and their ages are between 8 and 2. These children do not go to school, and learn mostly at home.We would expect this volunteer to work five days a week, Monday to Friday, from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. We will provide accommodation and meals. It is important to us that we are happy as parents with the person who minds our children, and it is also important to us that our children are comfortable with this person. Therefore it would be necessary for this volunteer to come to us for a trial period, before committing to a longer stay. A trial period could be a week to two weeks. If it worked out, we would be happy to keep someone for up to one year.Killeany Lodge Pilgrim Hostel: On occasions, a volunteer position is available at Killeany Lodge Pilgrim Hostel. This hostel has 26 beds and an acre of gardens. The hostel attracts groups with a spiritual orientation and also individuals. The gardens include a plastic tunnel where organic produce is grown. Aisling Árann requires one person (or a couple who would share one room) to help manage the hostel and grow the vegetables. The hostel is open from Easter to the end of October. The growing season is from March to October. The volunteer(s) will receive accommodation, food and a generous pocket money allowance. Contact: lodge@aislingmagazine.com
Construction and Maintenance: There is also a volunteer opportunity for someone with building construction and maintenance abilities. We look for someone with a practical orientation who is happy to help with carpentry, wiring, plumbing, painting and other construction, repair and maintenance jobs. Depending on the jobs needing to be done at any particular time, this could be short-stay (two weeks minimum) or long-stay (up to one year). We offer bed and board at An Charraig in return for this work. Contact: ancharraig@aislingmagazine.com
